5 Secure Routing in Sensor Networks
The primary functionality of wireless sensor networks is to sense the environment
and transmit the acquired information to base stations for further
processing. Thus, routing (data dissemination) is a fundamental and very
important operation for sensor networks. E?±cient and secure data dissemination
is challenging and critical for the successful operation of many sensor
networks.
Past researches on sensor network routing have been focused on e?±ciency
and e?®ectiveness of data dissemination, and many routing protocols have been
proposed for sensor networks, such as Directed Di?®usion [21], TTDD [20],
LEACH [24], Mesh [19], etc. However, not many works have been published
on secure routing in sensor networks.
Secure routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) has been well studied,
and several secure routing protocols have been proposed for MANETs.
Some of the secure routing protocols are based on public key cryptography,
(e.g., [25], [26], [27]). However, public key cryptography is too expensive in
terms of computation and communication for sensor nodes. Therefore, security
protocols for sensor networks must rely exclusively on e?±cient symmetric key
cryptography.
