"iPod Repair QuickSteps"

You know, the data that he didn??™t adequately back up.
Scan Your Hard Drive
Scanning your hard drive is, by far, the best way to tell if your iPod is
experiencing hard drive issues. The scan should always be step one when
you suspect that the hard drive is bad. Don??™t go out and buy a replacement
NOTE
Your iPod nano stores tunes on flash memory, not a
conventional, volatile hard disk system, so there??™s no
hard drive to replace. Hence, we don??™t discuss the iPod
nano in this chapter.
TIP
It??™s no picnic when a hard drive conks out on you. Make
the best of a bad situation by replacing that lower-capacity
hard drive with a higher-capacity one. This way, you get a
little something for your trouble.
NOTE
As you might imagine, spinning the hard disk puts a
strain on the battery. To extend the life of the charge, your
iPod stores, or caches, some of the music data from the
hard disk to its memory while the music is playing, which
cuts down on the number of times that the platters have
to spin. This trick also helps to increase performance.
